Are Your Cholesterol Levels Where They Should Be?
“Ruth, tell me about cholesterol”, Joan said. “I hear so much about it.”
“I will tell you what I have read and you can decide for yourself. Always check with your doctor.”
“A friend had normal cholesterol and died. Does this happen often?”
“Research shows as many people with low cholesterol die as people with high cholesterol levels.”
Joan said, “You can’t mean it!! That’s really interesting. So if cholesterol readings don’t tell you your chance of heart problems, what does?”
“Apparently the triglycerides, homocysteine and C-reactive protein levels are better indicators according to research.”
Joan is curious why we even have cholesterol. We need cholesterol
- to make bile salts
- in cell membranes (the outer cell covering)
- to insulate nerves and even in the brain
- to absorb vitamins A,D, K and E
- for hormone production (among others, estrogen and testosterone)
- in babies and children for proper development of brain and nervous system
” Those all seem to be pretty important reasons.”
“They are all very important.”
Al Sears, M.D., says in his book, The Doctor’s Heart Cure, “if your HDL-C is 85 or more you are not likely to have heart disease.” He also writes if your cholesterol is too low you lose strength, libido and hair.
Dr. Bruce Fife says, as do other doctors, if the ratio between the Total blood cholesterol and the HDL (good) cholesterol is 3.2 or less there is low risk of heart attack.
“Thanks, I will have to go think about all this information” Joan said as she left.
